Bonifieur is of the greatest importance and significance to the entire history of coffee in the western world. King Louis XIV received three coffee plants as a gift from a Dutch burgomaster.

At the beginning of the eighteenth century the Dutch had control of the entire coffee industry in the world. The king decided to put an end to this situation. He ordered Monsieur De Clieu, the governor of Guadeloupe and Martinique, to grow the plant in the French Caribbean.

Over the three-month long sea voyage, De Clieu defended the three precious plants literally risking his own life. Amazingly, one of the plants survived and the rest, as they say, is history.

This was the beginning of coffee in the Caribbean! Bonifieur is not only the ancestor of Jamaican Blue Mountain, but is also the ancestor of all the coffees of Central and South America. An Arabica quality coffee, it is delicate, slightly fruity, well-balanced and with good body, exactly like a good vintage wine!

It is grown at an altitude of 300-400 meters in the shade of the banana trees on the mountainous slopes of an active volcano, La Soufriere (one of the highest mountains in the Caribbean).

The French word Bonifieur means ‘improve’ and it was given to this coffee because in the past it was used to improve blends of inferior quality, thanks to its extraordinary features and outstanding taste. Connoisseurs consider it one of the best coffees in the world, and also one of the rarest.
